Monsanto has made some friends in Louisiana; at the beginning of the month they solidified their relationship by breaking ground at their Luling site (where they will invest $975 million) with Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture & Forestry Mike Strain and Monsanto Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Kerry Preete, as well as several other state, local and company officials. The new production technology added here will support the launch of the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System. And according to Secretary Pierson, “The State of Louisiana is proud to support Monsanto and its growth of new agribusiness technology that will strengthen food and textile production domestically and around the world.”

In June of 2015 Monsanto and the State of Louisiana announced the company’s preliminary plans to expand the Luling site. Then in April 2016, Monsanto’s board of directors authorized the final investment. Monsanto plans to launch the new system in the U.S., Brazil, and other parts of Latin America, in the next decade.
When the job is completed in 2019, the expansion project will have created 95 new direct jobs averaging $76,500 per year, plus benefits, and 20 new contractor jobs. “The company will retain 645 existing company jobs in Luling, and LED estimates the project will result in another 450 new indirect jobs, for a total of more than 540 new permanent jobs in Louisiana.”

Though there are many of us all over the world who don’t believe the poison giant needs to tech, the company is selling this new product as “…another tool that will assist farmers in fighting resistant weeds.” (If you are aghast that they still don’t realize what they are doing to our world, join the club.)
From the article:
“Monsanto is proud to celebrate this important milestone today,” Preete said. “This expansion represents the single largest capital investment in Monsanto’s self-manufacturing history and reinforces the confidence our company’s leadership has in our Luling team and the commitment to the local community.”
When the project is completed they expect the Luling site to supply about one-third of the demand for dicamba-based products. (Dicamba and glyphosate are the poison active ingredients in the Roundup Ready Xtend Crop System.)
We have to wonder if Luling, LA is going to see an uptick in cancer and other illnesses? The thought of working at that plant terrifies me.
