While the Northwest is known for its bicycle loving folks, the East Coast may soon join them! East Coast Greenway Alliance, a non-profit organization, is building a 3,000-mile bike path that will stretch from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida, giving cyclists the chance to see 15 states and 450 communities via two wheels.
So. Fun. I’m not sure how much of it I could do but I want to try! Oh wait. The good news is I can, because I live a couple of houses OFF the trail right next to the intercoastal and a half mile from the beautiful Atlantic in Florida.
I’m selling it so if you want a beautiful 3 bedroom 2 bath organic retro 50s house with a ton of extras let me know! (Only I would throw the house in the article, but I am selling it and it’s absolutely adorable and been featured in many blogs and online magazines.
Back to the story.
According to the article, about 850 miles have already been created, and another 200 miles will be added by 2020.
Can you imagine seeing the country up close- with no windshield between you and the community? And if you have a family old enough to solo bike, or tow, you could spend summer vacation showing your kids the east coast of the U.S. Not to mention the health benefits AND savings on airfare!
From the article:
“The ECGA has been working on the project since 1991, creating segments of the trail throughout the East Coast to eventually link together. Though the organization cannot predict exactly when it’ll be completed (the project relies on local volunteers to bring path segments up to code), its goal is to have a 95 percent traffic-free route by 2030.”
The path is intended to be completely off-road and traffic-free, and will run alongside the rivers and train tracks that connect the East Coast’s cities. Check out the video below for more info:
