Have you ever found yourself in an art gallery struggling to find meaning in a piece of art? This happened to 17-year old TJ Khayatan on a recent visit to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. After seeing a stuffed animal on a gray blanket, TJ questioned whether this was really impressive, saying:

“Upon first arrival we were quite impressed with the artwork and paintings presented in the huge facility. However, some of the ‘art’ wasn’t very surprising to some of us. We stumbled upon a stuffed animal on a gray blanket and questioned if this was really impressive to some of the nearby people.”

TJ decided to see if people will stare at, and try to artistically interpret, anything – no matter what it is – if it is in a gallery setting. So, he set a pair of glasses down on the floor and walked away.

It wasn’t long before the glasses were surrounded by people observing the “artwork.” Several were even taking pictures.

art is open to interpretation

TJ reacted to the gathering around his piece of “art” by tweeting:

I like to think they imagined the floored glasses to represent the dumbing down of culture, or perhaps the viewing of life through a lens, possibly with a nice, lower-case title like ‘myopia‘ or ‘real eyes (real lies)‘.

The tweet has already attracted over 45,000 retweets, making his prank a modern art piece itself, don’t you think?

After his prank, however, Khayatan was quick to defend modern art:

“I can agree that modern art can be a joke sometimes, but art is a way to express our own creativity. Some may interpret it as a joke, some might find great spiritual meaning in it. At the end of the day, I see it as a pleasure for open-minded people and imaginative minds.”

We think you’re pretty funny, TJ.
