Arnold Schwarzenegger has embraced a vegan diet, and the former bodybuilding champ is now almost entirely powered by plants.

The seven times Mr. Olympia champion recently revealed he’s eliminated meat and dairy from his diet in favor of almond milk and Beyond Meat, among other plant based foods. Eggs are the only non-vegan ingredient he still consumes.

Schwarzenegger, who now stocks his fridge with vegan meat, fruits, and vegetables, offers a glimpse into his diet and exercise regime on the Men’s Health “Gym & Fridge” YouTube series. 

Schwarzenegger, who said he has turned more health conscious recently, has left behind his old diet that had him consuming alot of meat, and 10 to 15 eggs a day. Now, for protein, he mixes up a smoothie with almond milk garnished with a banana and tart cherry. And he likes to cool down with slices of watermelon when it is scorching outside. The actor-turned politician told Men’s Health:

“Now I eat more oatmeal, and greens, and vegetables, and healthy foods.I stay away more from the meats and more from animal products, and animal proteins, because there was this misconception that that’s the only way you get big and strong, so now I back off that and I feel much better.”

He cautioned his viewers on supplement abuse in the YouTube video, saying: 

“They’re called supplements to supplement what you eat. So the key thing is not to rely on the supplements as much as you rely on good food. Natural food, a lot of greens, a lot of fruits, and a lot of really good proteins.” 1

Schwarzenegger recently filmed a documentary that debuted on September 17 called The Game Changers. It profiles several plant-based athletes and celebrities. In the series, he hopes to dispel various myths that state athletes need a high meat diet to maintain strength, stamina, and endurance. He says:

“Selling the idea that real men eat meat. But you’ve got to understand: that’s marketing. That’s not based on reality.”1
