NBC: Dept. of Health investigating after hundreds of employees become sick after holiday luncheon

Recently, 800 Watson Clinic employees were treated to a catered lunch for a holiday party, at the main clinic on Lakeland Hills Boulevard. Then, more than 250 employees promptly got sick with stomach symptoms like nausea and vomiting. The Department of Health is now working on tracing the source of the illness. A Watson Clinic spokesperson emailed the following statement: “Watson Clinic is currently working with the Florida Department of Health to determine the cause of the illness that afflicted over 200 of our employees following last week’s holiday luncheon. CNN: Increased breast cancer risk might last decades after childbirth, study says

A new study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found that compared with women who have never had children, women who have given birth may have an increased breast cancer risk that continues for up to 23 years after their most recent birth. However, experts warn that this shouldn’t cause women to worry or stop having children because the risk is small. (The study was conducted in women younger than 55 and breast cancer risk tends to be low in that population of women.) “Living” chandelier made with algae-filled leaves naturally purifies the air

Julian Melchiorri is a biotechnologist and design engineer and I think you’ll agree- a genius as well. The transparent liquid filters through light, giving off a warm glow. While green design is often based on clean lines and ultra-modern styles, Melchiorri’s chandelier is a sophisticated lighting piece that proves eco-friendly concepts can...

Thanks to the work done by scientists, that we reported on back in August, state and federal environmental officials are finally reopening an investigation into whether buried military debris has caused a cancer cluster in the area and specifically, a South Patrick Shores subdivision. Metal detectors have found evidence of a military dump from the 1940s, in the backyards of some of the houses near Patrick Air Force Base. These findings make the cancer concerns and fears of groundwater contamination more real. And imperative to investigate. RELATED STORY: Florida man does stunning rap about red tide and big sugar. CNN: Breast cancer testing out of date says study

A study published today (Monday, Dec 10th) in the Journal of Clinical Oncology has found that the current guidelines for genetic testing of breast cancer patients, limits the number of women (and men) who can get tested and because of those restrictions, the tests miss as many patients with hereditary cancers as they find. RELATED STORY: 8 pink foods that fight breast cancer Dr. Peter Beitsch, co-author of the study and a cancer surgeon practicing in Texas noted that with insurance companies paying attention to those guidelines, “patients without genetic test results might not receive the appropriate treatment for their cancer,...
