Big Pharma and the rise of Gangster Capitalism

(Editor’s Note: A big thank you to Washington’s Blog for the story below.) Thanks to decades of gangster films, we all know how gangster capitalism works: the cost of “protection” goes up whenever the gangster wants to increase revenues, any competition is snuffed out, and “customer demand” is jacked up by any means available– addiction, for example. This perfectly describes the pharmaceutical industry and every other cartel in America. You might have read about the price increase in Acthar gel, a medication to treat Infantile Spasms. (via J.F., M.D., who alerted me to the repricing of this medication from $40 in 2001 to the...

On Sunday, the Gainesville Sun reported that documents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service show a University of Florida research unit killed more than 150 birds in the past 10 years to protect plant science work.2 Of the animals killed, 47 were sandhill cranes and 105 were ring-billed gulls. Although the gulls are not considered endangered or threatened, the sandhill is designated by the state as a threatened species. Folks, none of the plant science work they are doing is worth the killing of these birds; the Plant Science Research and Education Unit lets researchers study new crops and growing techniques. (In...

ABC: General Mills hit with lawsuit over glyphosate-containing Cheerios

(Note from Erin: The brave woman suing General Mills over Cheerios lives right near us here in Florida. Her name is Mounira Doss. I’ve been blessed by a life of good neighbors. When I shared this news today about the huge suit here in Florida, that their Cheerios contain cancer-causing weedkiller ingredient glyphosate (Roundup), I am reminded of a song by John Cougar Mellencamp called Crumbling Down. Because the walls are finally doing just that, and there’s no stopping it now. There are thousands waiting in the wings also suing Monsanto. We imagine the same will happen with General Mills. As...
