Romaine lettuce warning now includes Florida; 149 sick in 29 states

The CDC first posted warnings about romaine lettuce in early April.1 But it wasn’t until about two weeks ago that we started hearing about people getting sick or recalls for the leafy green. Health officials believe they have traced the outbreak to a farm in Yuma, Arizona (which provides most of the romaine sold in the U.S. during the winter) but are unsure how many more cases might be reported. The early or initial symptoms of E. coli infections usually appear about three to five days after a person ingests the bacteria (although it can affect someone in as little...

Follow the 5-to-1 rule for packaged foods

Written By Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on May 8th, 2018 When people think fiber, they think constipation. And it’s true: If we could get Americans to eat just the minimum recommended daily intake of fiber-containing foods, we could save our country $80 billion—and that’s just from the effects on constipation alone. And before you think rats couldn’t possibly chew through steel, think again. “There have been class action lawsuits in California, targeting Toyota for similar issues. And AAA repair centers have noticed that strange trend cropping up as well. And all with newer cars. ‘While advances in car construction can be beneficial to the environment, there may also be...

‘Dead baby’ came back to life, but no case of negligence against hospital

Last November premature twins (23 weeks) were born, one alive, one stillborn, at Max Hospital in Delhi. At some point, they were both put in plastic bags and given to the parents to bury. However, when the parents were on their way to have their last rites said, they discovered that one of the twins was, in fact, still alive. (Sadly, the baby died a few days later from medical complications.) And now, the Delhi Medical Council has (somehow) ruled there was “no negligence” on the part of the hospital since they never “formally declared” 5the baby dead. It...

How the investigation into the deaths of Dr. Barry and Honey Sherman turned from murder-suicide to double homicide

UPDATE: Information from the autopsies and other pieces of information gathered since December of last year have changed the Toronto police’s initial theory of murder-suicide to double homicide in the deaths of Dr. Barry Sherman and his wife, Honey. The investigation into their death is now in its fifth month. As you will remember, we initially broke the story saying the family wasn’t buying the murder-suicide angle. Read that story here. The following information comes from an ongoing Toronto Star investigation based on interviews with people who have insider knowledge of the case. While they provided the info they have...
