Painkiller that once cost $138 is now $2,979

It has to be that people simply don’t read the news. Or perhaps they think no one will notice when they do something completely outlandish…like this story. Taking a cue from others who have done the same thing and landed themselves on the front page of the mainstream media, an Irish drugmaker has jacked up the price of a painkiller that once cost a mere $138 (which is still astonomical to some) to almost $3,000 a bottle. That makes it 22 times more expensive than when the company acquired it in late 2013. And the worst part? The two...

The health benefits of laughter, tears, and kisses

In my video, Music as Medicine, I explored a study about how listening to Mozart can reduce allergic reactions. This reminded me of a similar study on humor, which I discuss in Laughter as Medicine. Ayurveda, one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body health systems

Five thousand years ago, the “sages of India”3 developed the art of Ayurveda and this system of natural healing, with its origins in the Vedic culture, “continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body health systems” in use today.4 But it has endured because it is more than just a system for treating illness. Rather, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) and it helps people stay vibrant and healthy so they can best enjoy the life they’ve been given. In the last couple of years, Ayurveda has seen a resurgence in...
