Standing Rock Vets May Head to Flint Next

The government in Michigan is ready to put the Flint mess behind them. However, the residents can’t because they are still drinking water through filters or out of bottles. Just one year ago, Flint, Mich., Mayor Karen Weaver declared a state of emergency because of lead-contaminated drinking water. The problem attracted national outrage and sympathy, and rightly so. But one year later, donations have slowed and little has changed because unfiltered water is still unsafe to drink. That is unless you ask the state. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says that their new data shows more than 96% of...

Research recently published in the journal Environmental Health found that hundreds of pilots currently flying commercial planes may be clinically depressed. Even worse still, researchers found that many of them may not seek treatment due to fears of negative career consequences (like being grounded). The new study comes just a year and a half after a depressed Germanwings co-pilot killed 150 people when...

Scientists Create a Mesh That Lets Water Through but Captures Oil

Researchers at The Ohio State University have developed a mesh that is capable of letting water pass through it while blocking and collecting the oil that comes into contact with it. The material is actually a piece of stainless steel that is coated with the super-thin oil repellant. “If you scale this up, you could potentially catch an oil spill with a net,” said Bharat Bhushan, Ohio Eminent Scholar and Howard D. Winbigler Professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State. The steel is sprayed with a fine layer of silica to produce a randomly bumpy surface.  From here, a polymer...

20 Things No One Thought An Onion Could Do

Onions are an impressive vegetable. In fact, people were using them in the ancient world to both help AND prevent illness. Sadly, natural medicines like onions often get neglected because of their smell and aftertaste but they are so powerful that they are worth the pungent taste and smell! From the article: “The onion is a member of the allium family, along with garlic and chives. Due to a high sulfur content, onions are naturally antibiotic, antifungal and antiseptic. They offer the best instant help for vomitingand can be consumed regularly as a general antibiotic that can help protect your immune...
