Night Shifts Perpetuate Ill Health

(This is Erin- this story is for me and maybe some of you too, so pay attention: Night shifts are a health hazard!) New studies have found that people who do shift work, those who bounce between sleeping at night and sleeping during the day, have higher risks of coronary artery disease, diabetes, weight gain, and some cancers. And for those who have worked a decade of shift work, their brains show cognitive decline years in advance. Yikes. How Night Shifts Perpetuate Ill Health From the article: “The more we learn about sleep, the more we learn the importance...

Cannabis Saved our Granddaughter’s Life so We Donated $33.7 MILLION to Medical Research

Sweet little Katelyn, now 4, was born with a rare genetic disorder called Dravet Syndrome. During her worst bouts, she would seize over a thousand times a day- starting when she was just 6 months old. Despite taking a number of antiepileptic medication, her seizures continued, doing damage to her brain and mental function. And that’s when her grandparents decided to civilly disobey the laws of Australia and purchase her some CBD oil. Communities downstream from Williamsport that get their drinking water from the Susquehanna River were warned there could be gasoline in the stream. (By late Friday afternoon, there was still no confirmation that any of the gasoline had reached the river.) The extent of the damage won’t be fully known until the water recedes. As a...

More Than 100 Rushed to Hospital After Major Chemical Spill

(Editor’s note: Between this and the massive Sunoco gasoline spill into a river it’s been one heck of a scary week.) The Atchison City, Kansas, Manager’s Office reported two days ago that sodium hydrochlorite, also known as sodium hypochlorite, and sulfuric acid, were accidentally mixed together in the wrong holding tank on Friday morning, at MGP Ingredients Inc., causing a reaction. Because of the chemical spill, 102 people had to be treated in hospital. While most patients were treated, observed and released, three patients had to be admitted to Atchison Hospital and one was admitted to the ICU but was in stable...

Can Peppermint Improve Athletic Performance?

Ever since smoking was prohibited in night clubs, customers have increasingly noticed other unpleasant smells present in the club—like body odors. So, researchers in Europe thought they’d try to cover them up. The researchers measured the effects of peppermint, for example, on dancing activity and asked people to rate their energy level. They found that with peppermint scent, people felt more cheerful and danced more, and so, concluded the researchers, “environmental fragrancing may be expected to have a positive effects on club revenue.” Innovative nightclubs are already inviting “aroma jockeys” to smell the places up. Peppermint Improves Performance The...
