These 13 Foods Aren’t What You Think They Are

(Editor’s Note: I know I say it a lot but, I’m a vegan so there are quite a few things here that I wouldn’t eat anyway, but I was intrigued by the topic. Read on. ) Who doesn’t look forward, in the cold winter months, to a big bowl of pasta? Maybe even with some parmesan cheese? Or perhaps you WOULD have looked forward to that before you heard the news that the parmesan in the cans at the store is just cheese and wood pulp- a filler- yuck. Codeine is Not Safe for Kids

I feel like this should have been a no-brainer for far longer than the last week and a half but hey, progress… The American Academy of Pediatrics has FINALLY said that codeine isn’t safe for children and shouldn’t be used to ease pain or relieve coughs (there is little proof of its effectiveness in kids’ coughs and “mounting evidence” suggesting that for some kids it might not even work as a pain reliever). Unfortunately, the $318 price tag puts it out of reach for many people....

While the EPA has never set a specific limit for chromium-6 in drinking water, there is scientific uncertainty regarding safe levels of this chemical in our drinking water and possible long-term consequences of ingestion. The analysis from the Environmental Working Group, an independent advocacy group, looked at evidence from water systems across the country and concluded the tap water of 218 million Americans contained levels of chromium-6 they consider dangerous; levels that are at or above 0.03...

New Alternatives For the EpiPen Following Mylan’s controversial business choice to hike the price of the EpiPen up 400% to over $600, medical trailblazers are finding ways to challenge the greedy company with cheaper alternatives. Now, the pharmaceutical hero is taking on EpiPen by developing a customizable and compoundable alternative to Mylan’s product for less than $100. Baum has expressed shame over the company’s decision to gouge the public on such an important medical expense...
