DEA to reject marijuana’s medical use, will keep status Schedule I

I’m so angered to have to report this, although I shouldn’t be the least bit surprised: at some point today (we believe) the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will publically announce that they will continue to deny requests to change the legal classification of marijuana, thereby rejecting arguments that it has medical value. Super. This means that marijuana will remain a Schedule I controlled substance, subject to restrictions- in spite of the fact that four states have legalized cannabis for recreational use and 25 states, plus the District of Columbia, have medical marijuana laws. For months the DEA had been...

This Brave Woman Shows Us What It Looks Like To Lose 110 Pounds

Recently Elna Baker wrote an article for Refinery29 describing her personal experience with losing 110 pounds, including the mental impact it had on her. Overweight for most of her life (weighing 265 at her heaviest) in her mid-20s she decided enough was enough. But once her weight loss journey was over, something she didn’t think was even possible, she was still miserable due to an enormous amount of sagging skin.   She says that after dropping the weight she could, “lay on my side and pull it a half-foot in either direction.” She would go on to have four surgeries to remove...

Scientists Grow Mini Brains

Using stem cells, esearchers in Singapore grew mini midbrains in their lab; the group created 2 to 3 mm long brain organoids (pieces of tissue) which they will use to conduct further studies related to Parkinson’s Disease. The 3D tissues will help provide a platform for scientists as they continue to look for treatments for Parkinson’s and other age-related brain diseases. The mini midbrains have, “functionally active dopaminergic neurons which produce dopamine that plays an important role in motor control, motivation and executive function”, reports the article. According to the study, researchers also detected, for the first time in...

If you blinked when you read that title, you aren’t alone. In 2015, the US government added a page on their official cancer advice website about the use of cannabis and cannabinoids. From the article: “The National Cancer Institute, part of the US Department of Health, now advises that ‘cannabinoids may be useful in treating the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment’ by smoking, eating it in baked products, drinking herbal teas or even spraying it under the tongue.” And very surprisingly, they list other uses as well, including anti-inflammatory activity, blocking cell growth, preventing the growth of blood...

Get ready for one of the most action packed meteor showers in existence!

The Perseids meteor shower is one of the most vibrant of all meteor showers, often dropping about 80 flaming rocks per hour.  It seems, though, that things have ramped up. “This year, instead of seeing about 80 Perseids per hour, the rate could top 150 and even approach 200 meteors per hour,” NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke told Space.com. August 12 is the day when the shower will be at its most intense.  It will continue on until August 24.  If you want to get a good view, check it out before the full moon on August 18. Keep watch...
