Diet Soda in Pregnancy Is Linked to Overweight Babies

According to a new Canadian report, published in JAMA Pediatrics, drinking diet soda and other artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy is associated with having overweight 1-year-olds. The team studied 3,033 mothers who delivered healthy, single babies between 2009 and 2012 and had completed diet questionnaires during their pregnancies. They later examined the babies when they were a year old. Nearly 30 percent of the women drank artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy. After the team controlled for maternal body mass index, age, breastfeeding duration, maternal smoking, maternal diabetes, timing of the introduction of solid foods and other factors, they found that women...

TSA NIGHTMARE! 70,000 Missed Their Flights This Year on American Airlines Alone!

This year, airport screening delays have caused more than 70,000 American Airlines customers and 40,000 checked bags to miss their flights. And, we hear it’s going to stay this way throughout the summer season. Over the last week, Ron Paul has been on Fox Business to offer a solution to this ridiculous problem that won’t merely be fixed by crony “privatization” (when a government-favored corporation takes over all airport security) or a one-size-fits-all solution. Paul instead believes that each airline is responsible for its own business and therefore (one assumes) has a vested interest in making sure that their customers...

FDA Requires Stronger Warnings for Antibiotics’ Side Effects

Recently the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) announced that it will require more stringent warnings about the potentially dangerous and sometimes disabling side effects from the commonly used class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. That class of medications is mostly sold as generic but there are well-known brand names such as Bayer AG’s Cipro (generically called ciprofloxacin) and Johnson & Johnson’s Levaquin (or levofloxacin). Fluoroquinolones, which are commonly prescribed, have been on the market for about three decades. The FDA would like an updated box warning which would inform patients that the serious side effects of the drug generally outweigh the benefits...

Dow-DuPont Merger Will Cripple Farmers and Food Sovereignty, Groups Warn

Public interest groups urged the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to block the mega-merger of chemical corporations Dow and DuPont, which the organizations argue is part of a larger effort to put a “corporate cabal” in charge of the nation’s food system. If the merger is allowed, “[Dow and Monsanto] would control 76% of the market for corn and 66% of the market for soybeans, giving them the power to charge farmers higher prices and effectively decide which seeds farmers could plant.” —FWW, NFU, AAIDow and DuPont announced in December plans “to merge into a $130 billion giant, thereby...

‘Overwhelming’ Evidence Shows Path is Clear: It’s Time to Ditch Industrial Agriculture for Good

If you can count as successes increased greenhouse gases, ecosystem degradation, rises in hunger and obesity, and unbalanced power in food systems, then industrial agriculture has done one heck of a job. That’s according to a panel of experts, whose new report, From Uniformity to Diversity: A paradigm shift from industrial agriculture to diversified agroecological systems (pdf), calls for breaking the chains that lock monocultures and industrial-scale feedlots to the dominant farming systems in order to unleash truly sustainable approaches—ones that use holistic strategies, eschew chemical inputs, foster biodiversity, and ensure farmer livelihoods. As the authors write, “The evidence...
