Thanks in large part to all the problems surrounding air travel of late, Canada has taken some bold steps to protect passengers. From now on, no one who has bought a ticket for a domestic or international flight in the country will be allowed to be removed because of overbooking, thanks to their new passenger bill of rights. Once again, someone else has done something we should do and yet, probably never will.

Transportation minister Marc Garneau said if flights are overbooked and the airline can’t find a volunteer with the compensation they are offering, they will simply have to increase the amount offered. Or, and here’s a novel idea- STOP OVERBOOKING.

Also, as part of the new bill of rights, minimum compensation standards will be set for damaged baggage, and the regulations will increase the cap on foreign ownership of airlines from 25% to 49%.
The Canadian government hopes to have the new regulations in place in 2018.
