A man with special needs was found two months ago walking alone along a highway in Waco, Texas. His name is Chris Barrington, and he has the functionality of a 6-year-old. Barrington’s father has leukemia and had become so sick he is unable to move.

When his father couldn’t care for him anymore, Barrington went out alone and wandered around for two whole days. When he was finally picked up by the sheriff’s department, Barrington could only remember only one name – Mrs. Girard.

RELATED STORY:

Michelle Girard was his junior high school teacher for four years, but she hadn’t seen him in ages. When the police department called her, she was happy to take Barrington in. She told KWTX-TV:

He deserves a good life. He’s had a hard life.”1

Girard says Barrington hasn’t experienced much in his life, adding:

He’s never had a birthday present, a birthday party, he’s never had Christmas, Thanksgiving, nothing. So this year is going to be full of firsts.”1

RELATED STORY:

Barrington turned thirty earlier this month, and Girard made sure he experienced his first-ever birthday party. He had a special celebration with her family, who have become his family. He also went on his first boat ride.

According to KWTX, Girard is now working on making her former student a permanent part of her family. His father passed away on Aug. 1, and she is currently applying for legal guardianship. She said:

I said ‘what happens if I don’t take him? Will he get in a group home?’ They said no, he’ll he’d go in to an institution. I said not on my watch he’s not.”1

RELATED STORY:

Clearly, Girard made a huge impression on Barrington all those years ago. And now that beautiful connection is destined to last a lifetime.
