Disney has confirmed that its new series, “The Owl House” will feature a bisexual lead character named Luz Noceda.

Luz is a 14-year-old Dominican-American girl. The series follows her adventure of becoming a witch, even though she has no magical powers.

She is Disney’s first bisexual character to make a debut on a television series.

Dana Terrace, the series’ creator, said that at first, “certain Disney leadership” was not very fond of the idea of having a gay character. She said in a tweet:

“I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard. I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could not represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the channel.”

According to CNN, Terrace has gotten positive feedback from viewers and urges others to fight for what they want to see represented in the media and society. Many are thanking her for representing the gay community, and wishing “The Owl House” had been around when they were children.

Alex Hirsch, the creator of Disney’s “Gravity Falls,” is one of those commenters. Disney would not allow Hirsch to have any kind of LGBTQ+ representation. He says in a tweet to Terrace:

“Apparently ‘happiest place on earth’ meant ‘straightest. Thanks to Dana Terrace and team, there are explicitly queer animated main character on Disney TV.”

“This time, Disney- you did good.”

Terrace, who identifies as bisexual, said she wanted to write about a bisexual character, so she really pushed Disney to allow the role, adding:

“Luckily my stubbornness paid off, and now I am very supported by current Disney leadership.”
