If you’ve spent any time on this page, you know I post a lot about the wonders of coconut oil. I know it might seem a little nuts but this amazing fruit has so many uses and is so readily available that I want to share this info with you guys. However, the kind you buy makes a huge difference.

So, with that in mind, our friends at Fit Life TV put together a list showing the differences between the 2 main type of coconut oil- virgin and refined. Check it out:

VIRGIN(Nutvia Organic Virgin Coconut Oil)REFINED(Nutvia Organic Refined Coconut Oil)
  • Coconut scent and flavor
  • Neutral scent and flavor
  • Heat up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Made from fresh coconuts
  • Made from dried coconuts
  • Unrefined
  • Steam refined, no chemicals used
  • Certified organic and non-GMO
  • Certified organic and non-GMO

Now that you can see the difference I’m sure you are wondering how they are made- see below:

VIRGINREFINED
  • Fresh coconut meat is scooped out and cold pressed.
  • Leaves behind just the oil.
  • Pure coconut flavor.
  • Made from dried coconut meat called copra.
  • Steam refine oil to achieve a neutral flavor.
    • CAREFUL: Some companies use harsh chemicals to produce refined coconut oil – beware!

Ready to eat it and use it for everything? Great! But, which kind should you buy? Depends.

They have the same nutritional profile so it’s up to you to decide whether or not you want the taste and smell of coconut (although there are some doctors out there -like my better half- who prefer virgin, cold-pressed). However, regardless of the kind you get, make sure its certified organic and verified to be non-GMO. Then be aware of some of the specifications for virgin vs. refined:

  • Virgin coconut oil should be:
    • Cold-pressed
    • Made without hexane
    • Never deodorized or bleached
  • Refined coconut oil should be:
    • Refined without using harsh chemicals
    • Steam-refined

Enjoy!
