More frozen food products across North America are being recalled due to a listeria (Health Nut News wrote about two listeria outbreaks in January) contamination that has reportedly been the cause of death for two people so far. This comes less than a month after an initial recall that the product manufacturers did not believe reached enough people that may be exposed to the contamination.

The foods being recalled include hundreds of different products sold from popular retailers such as Costco, Costco Canada, Walmart, Safeway and Trader Joe’s.

CRF Frozen Foods

The contaminated frozen food products came from CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington. These include all of the products processed at that specific site since May 1, 2014, which have since been distributed by over 42 different brands. Brand names that sold contaminated products include Organic by Nature, Panda Express and McCain Foods.

These products were being sold in both the United States and Canada and has resulted in the hospitalization of seven Americans and the death of two.

The public was made aware of the recall after CRF Frozen Foods sent out a news release, which the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then posted on its agency website before issuing an alert to its subscribers.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has informed CRF Frozen Foods that the government has identified seven people from three states who became ill and were hospitalized due to Listeria,” reads the companies recall notice. “Some of these illnesses have been linked to consuming CRF-manufactured or processed products, and unfortunately, two people died from their illness.”

The products being recalled due to listeria contamination mainly consist of frozen fruits and vegetables. According to the CRF Frozen Foods press release, these include:

  • organic and non-organic broccoli
  • butternut squash
  • carrots
  • cauliflower
  • corn
  • various beans
  • kale
  • leeks
  • onions
  • peas
  • pepper strips
  • potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • spinach
  • various vegetable medleys, blends, and stir fry packages
  • various berries (blueberries, cranberries, strawberries etc.)
  • cherries
  • peaches

This press release came as an expansion to an initial recall notice issued by CRF Frozen Foods on April 23, 2016. The recall originally directed towards 15 frozen food products, however it has since expanded to more than 20 times that number.

Although the company stopped production of food at its Pasco, Washington site, it expanded its recall due to the nature of the contaminated product. Since it was frozen foods that were contaminated, CRF Frozen Foods felt the need to reiterate its recall due to the fact the produce’s long shelf-life may mean that contaminated food may still be in some customer’s freezers.

“We apologize for any concern or inconvenience this expanded recall has caused our customers and consumers who enjoy our products. We are issuing this release to alert consumers not to eat these products,” CRF says in its press release.
