The hard truth is that milk is not good for you. It might taste good and you might be addicted to it, but it’s highly toxic- when pasteurized- to the human body. In fact, we are the only species who drinks the milk of ANOTHER mammal. And we don’t NEED it. In fact, Walter Willett, M.D., Ph.D. — the second-most-cited scientist in all of clinical medicine and the head of nutrition at Harvard’s School of Public Health- believes milk is more of a detriment to the human body than an aid.
Despite popular belief, milk has never been shown to reduce fracture risk. However, according to a study in the journal BMJ, those who consume dairy have a higher incidence of fracture. This finding is further supported by the fact that countries with lowest rates of dairy and calcium consumption (like those in Africa and Asia) have the lowest rates of osteoporosis. But, we’ve always been taught that “Milk does a body good” and that drinking it is part of a healthy diet. So, let’s look at the facts:
- Approximately 3/4 of the world’s population is unable to digest milk and other dairy products.
- Milk is very mucus-forming in the human body and is believed to contribute to allergies, ear infections, Type 1 diabetes, anemia, and even constipation.
- It may also contribute to various types of cancers as consumption of the product increases the body’s level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1).
To combat all the misinformation on the subject of milk, Vox recently created a video which illustrates the facade of the dairy industry. One point to pay attention to is the fact that we can actually get our daily recommendation of calcium, potassium, and protein from fruits and vegetables- even though the dairy industry has spent billions of dollars to convince us otherwise.
No worries, though, there are tons of tasty, creamy alternatives to dairy that are not only easy-to-make but affordable. ‘Milks’ or ‘mylks’ from rice, almonds, cashew, hemp, and even coconut can be found in most grocery stores, and some companies even sell dairy-free ice cream – like Ben & Jerry’s!
Think the idea of giving it up is impossible? Just remember, you might be a bit addicted and it will take your body some time to detox. Take it one day at a time, if you decide to knock dairy out, and don’t get too discouraged when you fail. And remember, even if you were to cut out dairy one day a week, or significantly reduce your intake, your body will still thank you.
