Families evacuated from a large gas leak Saturday evening in Yazoo County have been allowed back in their homes, according to the Mayor of Satartia.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said all lanes on Highway 433 were blocked in both directions because of the leak.

Local leaders said a 24-inch pressurized pipe containing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide ruptured in a heavily wooded area near Highway 433 near Satartia Hill. Residents in the area complained of a green gas and a noxious odor.

Officials said more than 300 people were evacuated and 46 people are being treated at a local hospital. All those who were hospitalized are expected to be okay.

Denbury Onshore, the company that owns the pipe, was contacted, and it was shut off.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is assisting the Yazoo County Emergency Management Agency. They reported that the rupture might have been the result of recent weather events.
