Hellman’s Failed at Suing Vegan Mayo Co.
Hellman’s (owned by Unilever) looks like they might have a little egg on their face.
After unsuccessfully suing Vegan mayonnaise company Just Mayo (see more below) for making vegan mayonnaise, now they’re doing the same?
Yep, they have a vegan line (About time Unilever! Now if only you’d make some organic and decent soap – No I would NEVER use DOVE Products!).
Hellmann’s announced on February 2nd that they would be producing an eggless and “carefully crafted dressing & sandwich spread”, a vegan “mayo” ladies and gentlemen. They expect the product to be in stores later this month.
You will remember that Hellman’s went after Hampton Creek who owns Just Mayo. They filed suit claiming that their Just Mayo product was mislabeled because it did not have eggs (). It seems however, that after all the free media coverage, by we the health conscious, Unilever reconsidered their suit. They went a step further and released this statement, “We applaud Hampton Creek’s commitment to innovation and its inspired corporate purpose. We share a vision with Hampton Creek of a more sustainable world.”, according to Compassion Over Killing. You gotta like the fact that they knew when they were beat!
Ha! Eggs. Beat. Pun unintended.
Just Mayo hasn’t had it easy. Sadly, the FDA went after them after Unilever dropped their suit (Gee FDA you’d think you work for these big corporations and not we the people!).
Finally Just Mayo WON and doesn’t have to change their name (Victory!) They didn’t just get attacked by Hellman’s and The FDA. No siree. The government backed egg lobby tried to attack Just Mayo in a series of scary emails that were obtained by the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act, see link at bottom).
It’s clear that Unilever has finally seen the light, the green light of market share (read: cash) and they understand that there is a continuously growing group of consumers who want plant-based products. Even many fast food chains are offering vegan or vegetarian options, it’s time to jump on the progress train corporate America!
