Unfortunately, it is possible to buy live sea turtles for food in some regions of the world. Arron Culling and his co-worker Mark were both shocked by this realization when they saw the endangered animals for sale at a local market in Papua New Guinea.

Although many sea turtles are listed as endangered or vulnerable, it is legal to fish for marine turtles in areas such as Mexico, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Turtles are harvested for their shells and meat in those countries.

RELATED STORY:

When Aaron and Mark discovered the turtles were going to be purchased for food, they knew what they had to do. They paid $50 to buy the turtles, and drove them to a secure area and set them free in the ocean.

These two kind-hearted men have rescued turtles several times. So far, they have rescued ten of these gentle creatures, giving them another chance to be free.

More information about protecting sea turtles can be found on the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s website.
