An Oregon mother is accused of taking her sick daughter out of the state to avoid cancer treatment — choosing instead to use CBD oil and other holistic therapies.

Kylee Dixon, Christina Dixon’s thirteen-year-old daughter, has liver cancer. A doctor ordered a prescribed treatment of chemotherapy and surgery, but Christina Dixon refused the orders and turned instead to alternative medicine. According to reports, doctors wanted to remove at least one cancerous tumor from the girl’s liver.

RELATED STORY:

Police in Nevada received a tip from the FBI and sheriff’s office on June 13 that Kylee and her mother were at a hotel in Las Vegas. Kylee was taken into protective custody and transferred back to Oregon.

In July, a Clackamas County Circuit Court judge ruled that state child welfare workers were permitted to make medical decisions for Kylee. They also issued a warrant for Dixon’s arrest.

RELATED STORY:

While in court, Kylee told the judge that she agreed with her mother’s treatment, and wanted to rely on alternative medicine. She affirmed that she realized the risks. According to KGW-TV, Kylee’s attorney, Rebecca Schaleger, told the judge:

She does not want surgery. She does not believe surgery is effective or necessary.1

However, a representative from Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) suggested that alternative medicine should be given alongside traditional medicine, not serve as a replacement for them. The Casa child advocate said to the judge:

“Without surgical intervention the tumor will grow causing pain, illness and eventual death.”1

Kylee’s mother insists her daughter’s treatment has gotten results. She said she believed that an alternative treatment of herbs, vitamins, and pure CBD oil has been powerful in treating Kylee’s cancer.

RELATED STORY:

Christina Dixon turned herself in last week and was booked early Thursday morning at Clackamas County Jail. She faces two counts each of first-degree custodial interference and first-degree criminal mistreatment. She is currently released from jail until her next hearing on August 19. She has not entered a plea, and her attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Parental rights advocates and family of Christina Dixon think the state went too far by removing Kylee from her mother’s care. Supporters call the state’s decision to take custody of Kylee “medical kidnapping.”
