San Francisco company makes dairy free “cheese” out of human dna strands and calls it the first “Vegan” cheese on the market. They say they hoping milk protein “from our own species” will mean fewer allergies.
Human DNA strands in GMO Cheese
Well, I didn’t realize the amount of shares this would get on My Facebook page when I posted it today, so now I’ve decided not to let it get lost in the black hole called Facebook and put it on my site and make it official.
My issue here is how can a cheese that is made with human DNA strands be called “Vegan”?
The company in California (called iGem) says its hit its goal of $15,000 US dollars but will Vegans (or not Vegans) take the bite?
I’ll stick to my natural organic raw Cashew cheese (I will post a recipe for those interested) and don’t think I’m interested in food made in a lab with human DNA. I don’t even understand why this is necessary when there are so many amazingly delicious healthy natural organic cheeses out there that are dairy free!
iGem also said the following: (from the article on Human DNA “cheese”)
“To create our proteins, we study animal genomes to find natural milk-protein genetic sequences.
“We optimize the genes for use in yeast and synthesize the resulting yeast milk protein DNA from scratch.
“This DNA is then put into yeast cells where the cellular machinery takes over and produces real milk-protein from the DNA blueprint provided by us.”
The company said it “may be a while” before the finished product is ready for sale.
Regulations on food generated using genetically engineered organisms are complex, and more research needs to take place, it warned.
Again, I’ll stick to my delicious cashew cheeses or almond cheeses (I don’t eat soy cheese) and it melts and tastes just like real cheese to me without the dairy.
Until next time!
