French law forbids food waste by supermarkets

When I saw this little video rolling around on Facebook this week, I did some digging and found out that France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food. In February, the French senate unanimously passed a law requiring shops to instead donate the food to charities and food banks. This will allow charities to give out millions more free meals each year to people struggling to afford to eat. (Before you even begin to ponder, no, we don’t do that here and I can’t imagine that we- one of the wealthiest nations […]

[…]cites documents and other evidence that indicate company executives, mine managers, scientists, doctors and lawyers knew about the problem and failed to disclose it to regulators or the public. Reuters said it examined documents, including depositions and trial testimony, that show that from at least 1971 to the early 2000s, J&J’s raw talc and finished baby powders sometimes tested positive for small amounts of asbestos, a human carcinogen that can cause cancer. According to Reuters, the documents also depict successful efforts to influence US regulators’ plans to limit asbestos in cosmetic talc products and scientific research on the health effects […]

Alarming rise in kids hospitalized with suicidal thoughts or actions

[…]hospitals to identify the total number of emergency department and inpatient visits the team found that there were 118,363 children between the ages of 5 and 17 with a discharge diagnosis of suicidality or serious self-harm. And these increasing suicide rates among children mirror the adult numbers (for both children and adults, the month of the year that is the lowest for suicidal thoughts is July but numbers go right back up when school starts). However, what we still don’t know is WHY children think about or attempt suicide. While there are obvious risk factors, things like family history of depression/suicide, family […]

Iowa social worker sued after lying to court to remove children from parents

[…]was done to hold Chelsea Gray or DHS responsible for these actions, even after a county attorney found 10 other cases where Gray allegedly gave false information and reported this to the attorney general’s office. It’s unclear whether Gray faced any discipline and whether she gave false testimony in any other proceedings. DHS rejected AP’s request for the findings of the case review or any information about corrective actions taken as a result, noting that much of the agency’s work is protected by confidentiality laws. Gray said Tuesday that she was unaware of Sauer’s ruling because she was on maternity […]

Something you do every day could be making you fat and is preventable!

[…]they fail to realize is that this isn’t like staring at a blue wall (as one of the doctors says – wise up doc!). This isn’t merely the color blue but this is a blue light which stimulates us and can actually make our brain think it’s daytime. It wakes us up and is a known endocrine disruptor. Thankfully you can get yellow screens to cover your computer (but with tablets, computers and phones I just find the glasses easier). I have no affiliation with the company but if someone buys a pair and it helps them sleep better then […]

Chipotle is closing all their stores, but only for a day, here’s why

[…]64 people fell ill with salmonella in August and September. The source of the outbreak was found to be tomatoes served at 17 of the state’s Chipotle establishments. Around October 9, 52 people contracted E. coli at establishments in California, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington state. In December, more than 140 college students were sickened with norovirus after eating at a Chipotle in Boston’s Cleveland Circle neighborhood. Due to the company’s moves toward being GMO-free, some individuals think the outbreaks may have even been acts of bioterrorism; it’s still just a theory, though many of us know […]

Hope for Alzheimer’s patients

[…]These findings were confirmed in two larger studies of more than 1,000 autopsies each, which found the same thing. Atherosclerosis in the brain is significantly more frequent and severe in those with Alzheimer’s disease. This suggests that strategies proven to delay the progression of artery disease like plant-based diets may be useful for preventing or treating Alzheimer’s disease. Of course, autopsy studies are a little late for that, so to assess the impact of intracranial arterial narrowing on the progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease, researchers followed 400 people with cognitive impairment for four years using CT angiography—special CAT scans that evaluate the amount […]

CBS: Walmart & Whole Foods Parmesan Cheese Contain Wood

[…]a surprise visit to a cheese factory in rural Pennsylvania on a cold November day in 2012. They found what they were looking for: evidence that Castle Cheese Inc. was doctoring its 100 percent real parmesan with cut-rate substitutes and such fillers as wood pulp and distributing it to some of the country’s biggest grocery chains. One might be tempted to think of this as a ripped-from-the-headlines episode of “NYPD Bleu,” except that the FDA wasn’t playing. Some grated Parmesan suppliers have been mislabeling products by filling them with too much cellulose, a common anti-clumping agent made from wood pulp, or […]

US Govt Has Been Funding This Israeli Cannabis Researcher For 50 Years

[…]know exactly how the plant made the human mind and body react that way. Mechoulam and his team found the answer: THC triggered what they called the endocannabinoid system, which they figured out was the largest receptor system in the human body. Mechoulam’s team also determined that the human brain produces its own cannabinoids—two compounds that stimulate this receptor system almost exactly as THC does. They named one molecule 2AG and the other “anandamide,” after the Sanskrit word ananda, which means “bliss.” Mechoulam and other influential researchers believe that these compounds could alleviate dozens of diseases and ailments, including schizophrenia, […]

Man Dies After Tree Limb Falls on Him

[…]with his family and friends. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that Kibert was found unconscious in a greenspace behind a home around 8:15 a.m. A neighborhood resident called 911 and performed CPR until responders arrived. He was taken to OHSU but died from his injuries. His death is being attributed to the unusually strong windstorm that swept through the region on Friday. It knocked out trees, snagged power lines, and may have loosened the earth below the large tree. We sometimes forget just how strong trees can be. However, if you are in the middle of a storm and your […]
