UPDATE: People reports that the autopsy results have come in and show that Annie Marie Korkki, 37, died of acute pulmonary and cerebral edema and her sister Robin Marie Korkki, 42, died from acute pulmonary edema. While toxicology tests were conducted the results won’t be ready for weeks. Police are now suddenly saying they found “undisclosed prescription medication” in the sisters’ room.
From the People article:
“Edema is the swelling of tissue brought on by a build-up of fluid. Pulmonary edema restricts the flow of oxygen into the body through the lungs, due to the fluid.
A common cause of pulmonary edema is connected to heart problems, and in its acute form comes on swiftly – though pulmonary edema can also be caused by blood clots, near-drowning, reaction to certain drugs and viral infections, among other causes.
Cerebral edema, or swelling of the brain, can be caused by physical trauma, infection and strokes.”
(But again, there were NO visible signs of injury.)
End of update. See original story below.
(Editor’s note: Remember the 2 sisters from Quebec found dead in their Thai resort which turned out to be the fault of pesticides? Or do you recall the family of four poisoned by pesticides at an upscale villa just months ago in the Virgin Islands? With all the luxury resort pesticide poisonings, it does make one wonder about this case.)
Members of the Korkki family are grieving as they travel to the tropical island paradise of Seychelles to bring the bodies of their two sisters home- and perhaps solve the mystery of their death. The sisters were found in their shared villa at the upscale Maia Luxury Resort on the Seychelles, a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean about 900 miles from the coast of East Africa.
Officials in the Seychelles and the family are still awaiting the results of the autopsies.
Local media are reporting that Annie Korkki, 37, and Robin Korkki, 42, were found dead in their villa without any clear signs of physical attack or obvious trauma to their bodies.
The local newspaper, The Seychelles Nation, reported that the women had to be helped to their room by resort staff after drinking the night before they were found. Staff at the resort found the women in their room and reported it to the police on Sept. 22. From the looks of Facebook, the sisters were enjoying their time and were due to fly home on September 24th.
CBS reports:
“They were certified dead by the doctor at the Anse Boileau health center where they had been transported for examination,” the agency quoted a police spokesman as saying. “Preliminary examination done by the police on the bodies of the two Americans is not showing any signs of violence.”
Annie Korkki was a member of a synchronized skating team in Colorado. She had apparently taken leave from her team to go on the extended trip of a lifetime with her sister.
