Researchers at the University of Adelaide recently discovered an active anti-cancer component in coconut oil that constitutes 50 percent of its makeup. Called lauric acid, the component completely exterminated more than 90 percent of colon cancer cells after just two days of treatment in a colon cancer cell line (CRC) in vitro (researchers used a rat small intestinal cell line as a model of normal intestinal epithelial cells). The study was published in the journal Cancer Research.
One of the most common cancers to strike both men and women is colon cancer. And while there are a number of natural remedies linked to the prevention of the disease, the medical community is quick to mention that not enough research has been done to warrant actually prescribing them; altough this is a common theme when it comes to the idea of “food as medicine” and the science behind it.
Typically found in breast milk, lauric acid is a medium-chain fatty acid which supports the immune system and has plenty of antimicrobial properties. Many people consider raw, organic, virgin coconut oil to be a superfood that can help heal cancer and other diseases, and studies like the one above support that assertion.
But still other clinical studies have shown that the fats found within coconut oil “may be useful in treating and preventing diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis, virus-related diseases (mononucleosis, hepatitis C, herpes, etc.), gallbladder disease, Crohn’s disease, and cancer,” reports Collective Evolution. It’s even been shown to decrease the side effects of chemotherapy and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
Sadly, clinical trials are very expensive which makes studying the beneficial effects of lauric acid on cancer difficult for researchers who lack access to funding. So, despite the fact that multiple studies stress the need for more research, there isn’t money available. Why? Because medical research is funded by pharmaceutical companies and pharmaceuticals equal money. Remember, things found in nature can’t be patented. BUT, drugs can. Therefore, even though it’s in the best interest of mankind, it’s NOT in the best interests of pharmaceutical companies.
From the article:
“The medical profession is being bought by the pharmaceutical industry, not only in terms of the practice of medicine, but also in terms of teaching and research. The academic institutions of this country are allowing themselves to be the paid agents of the pharmaceutical industry. I think it’s disgraceful.” Arnold Seymour Relman (1923-2014), Harvard Professor of Medicine and Former Editor-in-Chief of the New England Medical Journal”
Perhaps it’s time for a billionaire to step forward and start funding trials that have NOTHING to do with Big Pharma:
- Right now, 25 percent of the active ingredients in cancer drugs are found only in the Amazon and only 10 percent of the plants found there have been studied for their medicinal properties!
- Studies published in Life Sciences, Cancer Letters and Anticancer Drugs, show that artemisinin, a derivative of the wormwood plant commonly used in Chinese medicine, can kill off cancer cells and do it at a rate of 12,000 cancer cells for every healthy cell.
- Lastly, bitter melon juice has shown the ability to kill pancreatic cancer cells in vitro and in mice in a study done by the University of Colorado.
And these are just a few of the potential cancer-curing plants from our beautiful earth. I must remember that we are making steps, even though they are just baby steps, but we’ve accomplished much and will continue to.
We will win the war against Big Pharma.
We have to- the next generation is counting on us.
