Soda Consumption Falls
A fabulous slump in the demand for diet sodas sold by both PepsiCo and Coca Cola, contributed to a drop in sales, for the 11th consecutive year, in the US. People are starting to get the message! The stuff in those drinks is poison. Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke both reported a decline of over 5%, while Diet Mountain Dew dropped 4.8%.
As consumers seek healthier options, the industry has found themselves a bit lost; the alternatives people are looking for, like juices and flavored water, don’t have as many calories and don’t include the sweetener aspartame, which people have finally come to understand is one of the worst ingredients you can put in your body. Although, the FDA does list the ingredient as “safe”. So, no worries.
(Due to that concern, Pepsi reformulated its diet soda recipe last year but only for some of its products- you can still get Diet Pepsi full of aspartame if you so desire.)
However, while there were some losers, there were also some winners. Sprite and Fanta, who are both owned by Coke, had volume gains of 3.3% and 8.3%. Sprite’s increase was attributed to the new marketing campaign that saw inspirational quotes on the cans, from hip-hop artists. Huh?
Still another winner was bottled water. Dasani, Aquafina, and Poland Spring reported increases ranging from 6.5% to 11.4%. In fact, growth for Aquafina was so strong that it helped lift the brand back into the top 10 “Megabrand” list.
While we are glad to see water on that list, bottled water isn’t great for you OR the environment. For more info, check out the video below:
