According to the World Health organization, cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. To combat this disease, the most widely used treatment is still chemotherapy. However, while chemo kills cancer cells, it also kills healthy cells (and can cause secondary cancers).

Thankfully, as many of us know, chemo and its effects aren’t our only choice. And, since we like to bring you any and all info on safe and natural ways to keep yourself and your family healthy, or help you to combat illness, we thought you would love to hear about the “Soursop” or “Graviola tree” fruit (it’s also called Guanábana, Anona, Corossol, Thorny Mango in other parts of the world). “Experts claim that this fruit is a natural remedy against cancer (colon cancer particularly) and is 10.000 more efficient than chemotherapy.” 1

Native to the tropical areas of Mexico, Cuba, the Caribbean, countries in South America, Somalia, and Uganda, it has a creamy flavor and tastes like pineapple and strawberry. It is rich in “carbohydrates, vitamin A, vitamin C, B-complex, proteins, magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, phosphorus and potassium”1 and helps fight against “depression, stress, high blood pressure, sleeping disorders and fungal and bacterial infections.”1 It truly is a miracle fruit.

However, it is most beneficial in fighting cancer because it directly targets cancer cells and leaves healthy cells alone. In fact, it has been shown to help fight colon, breast, lung, pancreas and prostate cancers. There are side effects (with high levels of annonacin, consuming large amounts can cause Parkinson’s disease) so make sure not to use it if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you already have Parkinson’s disease as it can exacerbate your symptoms. The best way to use this miracle fruit to your advantage would be with the help of a doctor.

If you have permission or just want to try the fruit, you can also use it in your morning smoothie:

  • 1/2 cup soursop pulp
  • 1 cup milk (best to use a nut milk as dairy is inflammatory and cancer thrives when the body is inflamed)
  • 7-8 ice cubes

Cut the fruit in half, scoop the pulp out and take out the seeds. Place ingredients in your blender. It’s that simple!
