On Wednesday, Tesla announced it’s now accepting $1,000 deposits for its Solar Roof. They also coincided the launch with an online calculator so homeowners could understand the costs associated with a solar roof.

The solar roof from Tesla is made of shingles that are indistinguishable from traditional roof tiling. And, while all the shingles on a Tesla Solar Roof look identical, only some gather energy from the sun; Musk himself estimates that most houses will need 40% coverage with active solar cells (this will help keep costs down and still do the trick). However, customers who are charging one or more electric vehicles will need additional coverage.
Elon Musk said:
“We want to look around at neighborhoods and see roofs that are beautiful and generate energy from the sun. We want that energy to be stored in Tesla Powerwall or somebody else’s version of a Powerwall so you can have a complete system that generates energy at night. That then goes into an electric car, so you have a sustainable transport solution.”
A couple of things to know about the roofs:
- Solar roofs will essentially be cheaper than traditional ones.
- The tiles will be guaranteed for the lifetime of the house, an “infinity warranty” and the power and weatherization warranty lasts for 30 years.
- Tesla will be making two Solar Roof designs available this year with two additional styles available in early 2018.
- Ordering is available in most countries throughout the world.
- People can expect to see delivery begin in the United States in late 2017, and sometime next year for overseas locations.
