Turmeric is Good For Depression

Hey Health Nuts and enthusiasts!  I’ve already told you about how amazing turmeric is before. It’s a powerful little root that is anti-inflammatory, stops pre-cancerous cell growth, treats skin cancer, can help with Alzheimer’s…the list goes on. Really. If you’ve got digestive issues, this root should be your best friend; I love to drink golden milk (made from your favorite nut milk or even cow or goat) to take advantage of its many benefits.

So, I was pleased to hear that it also helps fight depression, in fact it helps combat Major Depressive Disorder. As Prozac and its counterparts are dangerous and include serious side effects, this is a cure you can’t get too much of.

From our friends at Stay on the Healthy Path:

“In a recent study, Curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) equaled the effects of the prescription drug fluoxetine (the generic form of Prozac). Dr. Ajay Goel, Baylor Research Institute and Charles A Sammons Cancer Center, Baylor University Medical Center and study’s co-author, stated, ‘It is a novel and surprising application for this natural medicine. People with depression have higher levels of inflammation in the brain. Also, people with depression have lower levels of neurogenesis in the brain, meaning they make fewer new brain cells thank people with no history of depression. Curcumin is both a potent anti-inflammatory agent adn a powerful stimulator for neurogenesis.'”

The website Healthy Vegan Style has published a fun turmeric lemonade recipe to help you get your daily intake of this helpful root:

Turmeric Lemonade Recipe – [Makes 4 servings]

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cold filtered or sparkling water

  • 2 tablespoons freshly grated or powdered turmeric (peel it by holding a spoon against the root, convex side towards you, and lightly brush the spoon against it- the skin should come off easily)

  • 4 tablespoons 100% maple syrup, honey or Stevia if you are avoiding sugar

  • Juice of 1 – 1/2 lemons or limes (some like grapefruit)

  • Optional: add 1 blood orange or 1 tsp of coconut oil to help with absorption of the turmeric

  • we also know some only want their turmeric with black pepper for absorption but don’t recommend actually adding it in drink : )

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients into a small pitcher, stir and serve with a slice of lemon as a garnish.
