Rethinking Medicinal Cannabis

Hugh Hempel, a technology industry veteran, has become a health care entrepreneur and a surprising supporter of medicinal cannabis. In 2006, his identical twin daughters were diagnosed with Niemann Pick Type C, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease, often referred to as “Childhood Alzheimer’s.” Since then, Hugh and his wife have done a lot of research and discovered that a simple sugar compound called cyclodextrin could save their daughters lives. They have successfully filed applications with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and received permission to try this never before used treatment on their daughters. Their journey to develop...

Study confirms legal marijuana leads to dramatic decrease in prescription use, abuse

The journal Health Affairs released a new report in July which confirms what marijuana legalization advocates have been saying for many years: “legalized marijuana leads to less prescription drug use and abuse, as well as a decrease in Medicare spending”. A research team from the University of Georgia looked at the 17 states where medical marijuana had been legalized (since 2013 and earlier) and found, “painkiller prescriptions, as well as prescriptions for other medication, dropped dramatically compared to states where medical marijuana remained illegal,” reports Red Dirt Report. Live turtles being sold as necklaces in China

An astounding example of animal cruelty, Chinese street vendors are sealing small fish and amphibians inside of plastic and selling them as “jewelry.” The trend has been going on for years, but recent attention has brought the public’s eye on board. The Chinese government has been blamed for their lack of law on animal rights. The pouches cost about $1.50 and contain oxygenated and nutrient-rich water so the animals can breath. They also note that the animals will die after a few days unless they are released and the owner has no obligation to do that. Though not unique to China, this...

Did You Know That Possums Eat Almost All The Ticks In Your Yard?

Editor’s note: I had a possum who snuck through the cat door and went in and fell asleep on a pink cat bed. I was scared so called animal control to come take him back outside. They did and I made sure they just put him out in the property and he was fine. He kept coming back in though on a daily basis (much to the cats’ chagrin) and would eat their food. I finally gave up on keeping him out and would have to give him an apple once in a while at night to get him...
