River Explodes Into Flames From Methane
Just like here in the US where fracking is causing earthquakes and so many other incidents, our friends Down Under are also suffering. On the Condamine River, there is so much methane gas seeping in that it’s bubbling through and recently exploded and held a large flame for some time. The gas seeping began shortly after coal seam operations started near the river and the stretch of river that’s been affected is growing; the Queensland government has put stakes on the river bank to mark each place where there is a visible seep.
Recently, an MP from the Green party, who are seeking to fan fracking and unconventional gas in Australia, Jeremy Buckingham, travelled to Chinchilla in South Western Queensland to investigate the impact of the coal seam gas industry on the environment.
From Eco Watch:
“The concern is that depressurizing the coal seams for gas extraction has caused methane gas to flow up other cracks, fissures, bores, to the surface—such as through the Condamine River. This is directly polluting the river and the air, but also methane is a potent greenhouse gas and these fugitive emissions are a major concern.
‘Explosive gas boiling through a river shows just how damaging fracking and unconventional gas extraction can be,’ Buckingham said. ‘We should be going with clean renewable energy and banning fracking and unconventional gas in Australia. The era of fossil fuels is over.’”
