So far this year, there have been five pet food recalls across the United States. While some recalls affect multiple products, some are only one in a line. However, all pose health risks for our beloved pets.
To make sure your furbabies are safe and healthy, check out this list, of pet food products and brands recalled in 2016, from our friends at The Animal Rescue Site:
BLUE BUFFALO (JUNE 2016)
Animals affected: Dogs
Product: Life Protection Formula Fish and Sweet Potato Recipe
Reason recalled: High moisture content, potential mold contamination
What to look for: Muscle tremors, seizures, hyperactivity, vomiting, uncoordinated movements, increased heart rate, increased body temperature, dehydration, or lack of appetite
This recall is limited to a single batch that was manufactured during a two-hour period. The ingestion of moldy food could result in mycotoxicosis in your dog.
HILL’S PET NUTRITION (MAY 2016)
Animals affected: Cats
Products: Select packs of Prescription Diet and Science Plan wet food: Prescription Diet Feline c|d Stress Reduced Calorie Chicken, Science Plan Feline Adult Light Ocean Fish, Science Plan Feline Young Adult Sterilised Cat Multipack, Science Plan Feline Adult Light Favourite Selection Multipack, Science Plan Feline Mature Adult Favourite Selection Multipack, and Science Plan Feline Mature Ocean Fish
What to look for: Vomiting, diarrhea, depression, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, or abdominal pain
The increase in iron was believed to be an ingredient supplier error. Ingesting high levels of iron can result in digestive issues as well as other serious health issues for your cat.
FROMM FAMILY PET FOOD (APRIL 2016)
Animals affected: Dogs
Products: Chicken Pate, Chicken and Duck Pate, Salmon and Chicken Pate
Reason recalled: Excessive vitamin D levels
What to look for: Vomiting, weakness, depression, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, blood in feces, blood in vomit, constipation, seizures, or muscle tremors
This discovery was made by Fromm and the recall was carried out in coordination with the FDA. Dogs of all ages are susceptible to vitamin D Poisoning, though young dogs and puppies are at higher risk.
SMALLBATCH PETS INC. (MARCH 2016)
Animals affected: Dogs
Product: Frozen Duckbatch Sliders
Reason recalled: Possible Salmonella and Listeria contamination
What to look for: Lethargy, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, or excessive drooling
This recall was initiated after routine testing by the FDA. Dogs ingesting the food, fellow pets sharing the home, and owners handling the contaminated food are all at risk.
NESTLÉ-PURINA (MARCH 2016)
Animals affected: Dogs
Products: Select tubs of Beneful Prepared Meals, Beneful Chopped Blends, and Pro Plan Savory Meals. Click here to see the full list.
Reason recalled: Insufficient vitamin and mineral levels
What to look for: While the food isn’t dangerous per say, dogs who gain most of their nutrition from any of these products could be severely impacted over the long term.
Purina discovered the nutritional insufficiency through internal quality tests and took action quickly.
CARNIVORE MEAT COMPANY (FEBRUARY 2016)
Animals affected: Dogs
Product: Vital Essentials Frozen Chicken Patties Entrée
Reason recalled: Possible Salmonella contamination
What to look for: Fever, shock, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, dehydration
The contamination was discovered after a nationwide testing initiative by the FDA in June, 2015. No other Carnivore Meat Company products are involved.
If you find that you have any of the items listed above, dispose of it promptly and safely in a sealed container, so tht your pet cannot find it.
