Yesterday, a 13-year-old and 14-year-old were arrested at their homes in central Florida on the suspicion that they were planning to commit a mass shooting at The Villages Charter Middle School near the city of Wildwood, the next day- today. Thankfully the alleged plot came to light through rumors that had been circulating amongst the students; apparently, some students had been warned not to come to school today.
“In talks with investigators, both suspects admitted to talking about the plan, and both mentioned the deadly 1999 mass shooting at Colorado’s Columbine High School, a massacre that happened a few years before either of the teens was born, the sheriff’s office said.
No information was released by the sheriff’s office about a motive for the alleged plot or details about the context in which the students allegedly mentioned the Columbine shooting.”
We cannot imagine how scared the brave students who reported the rumor must have been but we are so thankful they did come forward- their actions may have prevented a terrible tragedy. The teens have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and are now in the custody of the juvenile justice department.
Though the investigators found no weapons on the students, in their bags, or in their school lockers they did find firearms in a search of their homes.
Today classes are being held as scheduled and sheriff’s deputies will have a larger presence than usual on campus. Hopefully, the kids can just get back to normal life.
Scary times.
