In a move that has likely surprised no one (I’m shocked it took them this long) Monsanto and a group of U.S. farmers are suing the State of California to try and stop it from “issuing cancer warnings on the company’s herbicide glyphosate, which farmers use on genetically engineered crops.”1 Glyphosate, the main ingredient in the company’s herbicide Roundup, has already been added to a list of cancer-causing chemicals. (They sued to try and stop that from happening too.)

RELATED STORY:

“The state acted after the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently ruled glyphosate a carcinogen. IARC said that along with other Monsanto chemicals Roundup could cause Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and cancer.”1

In the lawsuit, Monsanto and groups representing corn, soy, and wheat farmers reject that glyphosate causes cancer (big surprise) and say the state’s requirement for these warnings forces sellers of products that contain the chemical to “spread false information.” WHAT? (This is merely a game of semantics but Monsanto has the time and money to play.)

RELATED STORY:

Monsanto’s Vice President of global strategy, Scott Partridge:

“Such warnings would equate to compelled false speech, directly violate the First Amendment, and generate unwarranted public concern and confusion.” 1

(Apparently, since California added the deadly poison they want to spray on our food to the blacklist, Monsanto has suffered damage to its investment of hundreds of millions of dollars in glyphosate products. Good.)

Currently, the state of California is considering the proposal, No Significant Risk Level (NSRL) which would allow certain goods “that meet a standard for containing low amounts of glyphosate,” to be sold without the warnings Monsanto is so upset about.

RELATED STORY:

Monsanto has been in hot water for awhile as lawsuit after lawsuit has cropped up. And they are getting sued because of their new chemical dicamba, too. At some point, this Big Ag company is gonna fall and we can’t wait to see it happen.
