Woman nearly dies after injecting fruit smoothie into her veins

It’s been reported that a 51-year-old woman from the Hunan province in the south of China named Zeng thought she’d reap all the benefits of a morning smoothie by injecting them. That’s correct, rather than wait for her body to digest the contents and get the nutrients that way, she thought she’d blend a smoothie of 20 different kinds of fruit and use it as an intravenous drip! Apparently, Zeng is into “unconventional” health treatments. But who on earth would do something like this? “While she didn’t immediately suffer any adverse reactions, it didn’t take long for her arm to...

CBS: FL Senate gives right to grow veggies in the front yard a green thumbs up

Yesterday the Florida Senate voted to give Floridians the right to grow vegetable gardens in their front yards! The bill will now move to the House. “SB 82 prohibits a county or municipality from regulating vegetable gardens on residential properties, voiding any current regulations regarding the produce patches. Local governments, however, can still adopt a local ordinance or regulation that doesn’t specifically target vegetable gardens, like regulating water during drought conditions, limiting fertilizer use or controlling invasive species.”1 The bill was brought to the floor by Sen. Rob Bradley (R) who noted that there are so-called food deserts in many areas of...

Miami Herald: Dolphins poisoned by toxic algae also showed signs of Alzheimer’s-like brain disease

A new study led by University of Miami researchers has found that the toxins produced by blue-green algae have been found in dead dolphins that also “showed signs of Alzheimer’s-like brain disease.“1 Published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS One, this study is the first to show detectable levels of the toxin (BMAA) “in dolphin brains that also displayed degenerative damage similar to Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s disease and Parkinson’s in humans.”1 More study will be needed to definitively prove that the toxins are contributing (or causing) the disease. However, these findings add to a growing body of research showing algae blooms are...

Meadowlawn Elementary School via Facebook In January, 30 teachers at Meadowlawn Elementary School in Monticello, Indiana participated in an active shooter drill conducted by the White County Sheriff’s Department, and “left with bruises, welts, and in some cases bloody and broken skin”1 thanks to being shot multiple times with plastic pellets. “The incident came to light when Gail Zeheralis, a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA), testified about it before state lawmakers on Wednesday, while urging them to amend a school safety bill to prohibit the firing of projectiles during active shooter drills.”1 During the drill, four...

Bill would ban late-harvest spraying of Roundup weedkiller on oats

Thinking of her constituents, and especially their children, this week Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) introduced legislation that would “dramatically limit American children’s exposure to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, in food.”1Cur Although the bill would only ban late-harvest spraying of glyphosate on oats and require the federal government to test popular kids foods for the herbicide that’s been linked to cancer, it’s a start in the right direction. And it’s about time. Key provisions in DeLauro’s bill include:1 Prohibiting the spraying of glyphosate as a pre-harvest drying agent on oats. Lowering by 300-fold the permissible level...
