Consumer Products Made From Coal Ash, a Toxic Waste

Just two years ago, the EPA reclassified coal ash from post industrial use to post consumer use. Now, unless you know what that is, you might not have a problem with it. But, while the news didn’t make much of a headline, it should have us all concerned because according to Earth Justice, coal ash is “the toxic remains of coal burning in power plants, is full of chemicals that cause cancer, developmental disorders and reproductive problems. It poisons our water and kills fish and wildlife.” Back in 2010, the EPA Inspector General decided the agency needed to reconsider its...

Houseplants that Absorb Harmful Chemicals

We are constantly bombarded by a barrage of potent chemicals in our homes. However, a study by chemistry professor Vadoud Niri and his team at State University of New York, Oswego, found that houseplants are able to absorb some of those chemical compounds. The compounds, found around the house in paint, furniture, printers, cleaning supplies and even dry-cleaned clothes, can and do have effects on our health. In fact, some plants are better at it than others! Crassula argentea (jade plant), for instance, is good at absorbing toluene (a toxic chemical emitted by cars and found in gasoline, kerosene, heating oil, paint,...

For Some Knee Injuries Exercise Works Just as Well as Surgery, Study Finds

A recent study from researchers in Denmark and Norway has found that for middle-aged adults, diagnosed with a degenerative meniscal tear (common and caused by wear and tear of the knee joint), physical therapy might work as well as surgery and should be tried first. It seems that supervised exercise, say with a physical therapist, is just as effective as surgery and is less risky to the patient. It’s also far less expensive. The study was published in The BMJ. From the article: “An estimated two million people have arthroscopic knee surgery (also known as minimally-invasive or “keyhole” surgery)...

How to Cook Rice With Coconut Oil to BURN More Fat and Absorb HALF the Calories

The old saying “calories in, calories out” as the determining factor regarding weight loss may be an oversimplification of a more complex issue, but the hard facts show that we, as Americans, simply eat too much. According to the USDA, the average American eats 500 more calories per day than needed, while other experts suggest we eat 100% more food than we actually need. That is up 20% since 1970 alone, the equivalent of an extra steak sandwich per day. No wonder we are so overweight! At the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest...
