Public blasts DEP over new water toxins limits

Ugh. More bad news from Florida about the status of our water: the state of Florida wants to lighten its restrictions on about two dozen cancer-causing chemicals that could be discharged into rivers, lakes, streams and coastal waters. As if things aren’t already bad enough. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is currently updating human-health criteria for 43 dangerous chemical compounds it currently regulates and adopting standards, for the first time, for another 39. And of the 82 various toxic substances, a large majority would have even lower standards than are currently recommended by the EPA. And further, of the 43...

Newman’s Own begins selling line of organic salad dressings

The late actor, Paul Newman, founded Newman’s Own in 1982 after a homemade salad dressing gained popularity among his peers. He and co-founder, A.E. Hotchner, started what would come to be known as one of the companies that cares about the health of its customers. In June, 2016, the company released organic pasta sauces and now has its sights set on turning its six most popular salad dressings organic.  Olive oil and vinegar, balsamic, Italian, ranch and Caesar, the dressings are made from cold-pressed organic extra virgin olive oil blended with organic herbs and spices. The company “started as...

First genetically modified humans could exist by 2017

Developing the new CRISPR genetic therapy technology is taking us steps closer to being able to fully edit our own genes. CRISPR stands for Clustered, Regularly Interspaced, Short Palindromic Repeat and is a naturally-occurring defense mechanism used by bacteria.  Like a pair of “molecular scissors,” bacteria carries the DNA of certain viruses so it can recognize them when they appear.  When they see them, the bacteria will hook up to the viral DNA and cut out the mutated piece of the strand. Scientists have figured out how to manipulate this process and use it, at will, on viruses and...

Researchers Find Roundup Responsible For Harmful Algae Blooms In Great Lakes

Glyphosate, the main ingredient found in Monsanto’s best-selling herbicide, RoundUp, has poisoned Lake Erie. Scientists from Ohio Northern University (ONU) in the U.S. have discovered that glyphosate is largely responsible for an increase in harmful algae blooms that contaminate lake water and kill off life dependent upon this habitat. Namely, dissolved reactive phosphorous (DRP) has been contaminating Lake Erie and the Maumee watershed. This DRP comes from surrounding farms that rely on Monsanto’s weedkiller to grow their crops. The runoff ends up in the lakes, killing fish and contaminating the water. Though Lake Erie’s trouble with phosphorous is not...

15 detasselers need medical treatment after being exposed to herbicide

My first job (besides babysitting) was detasseling corn in the Midwest. I was 13 years old and had just graduated the 8th grade.  The hours were long, days hot as hell and the pay pretty bad.  I was sick as a dog after the first day and passed out (literally) on the machine. That was enough for me to say no no no. Never again. Now, just last week, 15 corn detasselers came into contact with dangerous herbicide on a farm, north of Conrad, in central Iowa. The victims were taken to Central Iowa Healthcare as a precaution, where...
