Based on government figures from 2016, the population of Mexico City was 8,918,653, making it the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. However, the metropolitan area is home to 21.2 million people, which also makes Mexico City the most populous metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere.
With all the cars, taxis, buses and motorbikes needed to transport that many people, you can imagine just how terrible the air quality is in Mexico City.
