Houston Set to Become Next Battleground for GMO Mosquitoes to “Fight Zika Virus”

[…]of pushing GM mosquitoes on locals in the Key West area, was met with a lot of controversy and resistance (the target neighborhood rejected their release so the company has to look for a new target area in the region) officials in Texas didn’t learn anything, “Houston-area officials are in negotiations to potentially release the mosquitoes in Harris County, the third most populous county in the U.S., which could make the area the first to release GMO mosquitoes in the United States.”   But before they can do this, they need an environmental assessment, which could take years to complete. 8 evidence-based health benefits of Kombucha Tea

[…]over 300 million people worldwide. It is characterized by high blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. A study in diabetic rats found that kombucha slowed down the digestion of carbs, which reduced blood sugar levels. It also improved liver and kidney function. RELATED STORY: How probiotics and fiber helps combat malnutrition Kombucha made from green tea is likely to be even more beneficial, as green tea itself has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels. In fact, a review study of almost 300,000 individuals found that green tea drinkers had an 18% lower risk of becoming diabetic. Further human studies are […]

HIV-Prevention Drug Has First Failure

[…]As health agencies have noted, since the rollout of Truvada, this is the first incident of drug resistance-failure out of the tens of thousands of people who are using PrEP to manage their sexual health. PrEP is, on the whole, working.” Doctors and researchers are encouraging calm- not fear. We must continue to educate at risk populations and remind them that Truvada isn’t magic; it’s part of a system of protection that also includes condoms and regular health screenings. Stay safe everyone. Source: The Verge and […]

Better Than Chemo: Turmeric Kills Cancer Not Patients

[…]free study The primary role of cancer stem cells in contributing to cancer malignancy as well as resistance to conventional treatment is addressed in the study. Whereas traditional cancer research methods focus on a treatment’s ability to reduce tumor volume (or the number of cells in a cancer cell culture), the cancer stem cell theory acknowledges that treatments have highly differential effects on the different cell types that comprise the tumor; namely, whereas the relatively benign daughter cells of a tumor may die when exposed to chemotherapy, the relatively chemotherapy-resistant cancer stem cell population (so-called “mother” cells) can actually increase […]

Foods to avoid to help prevent diabetes

[…]evidence that exposure to industrial toxins alone induces weight gain and insulin resistance, and, therefore, may be an underappreciated cause of obesity and diabetes. Consider what’s happening to our infants: Obesity in a six-month-old is obviously not related to diet or lack of exercise. They’re now exposed to hundreds of chemicals from their moms, straight through the umbilical cord, some of which may be obesogenic (that is, obesity-generating). The millions of pounds of chemicals and heavy metals released every year into our environment should make us all stop and think about how we live and […]

[…]paid consultant to the tobacco industry, but also because he was himself a smoker. “Part of his resistance to seeing the association may have been rooted in his own fondness for smoking,” which makes me wonder about some of the foods many modern-day nutrition researchers may be fond of as well. RELATED STORY: Obesity responsible for 40 percent of diagnosed cancers A famous paper in the British Medical Journal titled, “Parachute use to prevent death and major trauma related to gravitational challenge: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials,” lampooned this insistence on randomized controlled trials as the only legitimate evidence. Not surprisingly, they […]

Missouri court rules against Tesla selling at its own dealerships in the state

[…]forward thinking company is continuing their efforts to change state law but they face strong resistance from powerful dealership lobbies across the country (is anyone else tired of lobbyists?). What Telsa tried to argue in Missouri was that it could issue a franchise agreement to itself, thereby satisfying the local legal requirements. However, Judge Green said that the law requires the franchisee be a wholly separate entity. We wish them luck. I should be able to buy a car wherever I want, from whomever I want. This law does nothing more than protect the big guys from competition. What are they […]

11 Reasons Why Berries Are Among the Healthiest Foods on Earth

[…]meals. Importantly, these effects appear to occur in both healthy people and those with insulin resistance. In one study of healthy women, consuming 5 ounces (150 grams) of puréed strawberries or mixed berries with bread led to a 24–26% reduction in insulin levels, compared to consuming the bread alone. Moreover, in a six-week study, obese, insulin-resistant people who consumed a blueberry smoothie twice per day experienced greater improvements in insulin sensitivity than the group who consumed smoothies without berries. Bottom Line: Berries may improve blood sugar and insulin response when consumed with high-carb foods or when included in smoothies. 3. […]

Study: Coconut Oil a Healthy Saturated Fat – But the FDA Prohibits the use of “Healthy” in Describing Coconut Oil

[…]as, despite removal of the maximum dietary fat intake restriction from guidelines, a major resistance against saturated fats remains. Setting aside the issue of whether or not saturated fats should be restricted at all, given the abundance of contrary evidence in the medical literature, the Edinburgh Medical School researcher reported that such guidelines do not distinguish between different types of saturated fats. Saturated fats can be found in animal products, such as butter, as well as plant sources, such as coconuts and date palms. The rise in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) with coconut oil consumption is certainly a compelling finding. Results from a […]

9 signs you aren’t eating enough

[…]difficulty getting pregnant. 5. Sleep Issues Sleep deprivation has been found to lead to insulin resistance and weight gain in dozens of studies. In addition, while overeating may cause sleeping difficulty, it appears that strict dieting can lead to sleep problems as well. Animal and human research has shown that starvation-level calorie restriction leads to sleep interruptions and a reduction in slow-wave sleep, also known as deep sleep. In one study of 381 college students, restrictive diets and other eating problems were linked to poor sleep quality and low mood. In another small study of 10 young women, four weeks […]

Growing Doubt: a Scientist’s Experience of GMOs

[…]in our food crops. A second concern follows from GMOs being often resistant to herbicides. This resistance is an invitation to farmers to spray large quantities of herbicides, and many do. As research recently showed, commercial soybeans routinely contain quantities of the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate) that its maker, Monsanto, once described as “extreme” (Bøhn et al 2014). Glyphosate has been in the news recently because the World Health Organisation no longer considers it a relatively harmless chemical, but there are other herbicides applied to GMOs which are easily of equal concern. The herbicide Glufosinate (phosphinothricin, made by Bayer) kills plants because it […]

The company announced that the pipeline would remain shut down as they dealt with the leak but did not offer an estimate on when it would be back online.
