According to a news study published in the journal PLOS One, eating hot chili peppers could extend your life. Analyzing data from more than 16,000 Americans who had been followed for an average of nearly 19 years, the researchers found that hot red chili pepper consumption was associated with a 13 percent lower risk of death.
The study was observational so it doesn’t offer hard proof of cause and effect but it does add to the growing body of evidence which suggests spicy foods may have health benefits that can help people live longer.
And, previous studies have suggested that it is the capsaicin in the spice which holds the anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-cancer benefits. The team from the University of Vermont has called for further research to study certain chili peppers and to investigate the benefits of other spices, as well.
