CBS: 188,000 Evacuated Over Fear That California Dam Could Fail

On Sunday at least 188,000 people were evacuated from several Northern California counties due to damage at the Oroville Dam (which provides flood control for the region and is located about 75 miles north of Sacramento). At this time the nation’s tallest dam remains intact but the emergency spillway (one of two spillways), which helps to ensure that the water does not rush over the top of the dam when the levels are high, has begun to erode. Therefore, cities and counties near Lake Oroville had a mandatory evacuation due to fears it could endanger those communities living downstream....

CBS: Millions of gallons of wastewater dumping into Puget Sound in Seattle

Millions of gallons of untreated wastewater and stormwater began dumping into Puget Sound Thursday after high tides and heavy rains overwhelmed a King County wastewater-treatment center in Seattle. (Emily Eng / The Seattle Times) Flooding at West Point Treatment Plant in Magnolia’s Discovery Park caused damage that apparently fried an electrical circuit and triggered a system shutdown, a spokesman said. That has caused the county to operate the facility much of Thursday in “emergency bypass mode” — dumping untreated effluent directly into Puget Sound. Officials were still calculating how much untreated wastewater had flowed into Puget Sound. Doug Williams,...

Is Your Flaxseed Rancid?

A couple of years ago, all things flax (flax seeds, ground flax, and flaxseed oil) became very popular. And with good reason; the little seeds contain a wealth of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. However, what few people know is that once flax goes rancid, it degrades the health profile and alters the taste, aroma, and appearance of the seeds and oil. In fact, flax is sensitive to heat (it starts breaking down at 225 degrees Fahrenheit) and starts oxidizing if it’s exposed to light after only a few hours. So, how can you know if your flax is...

FOX: Thousands of Dead Honey Bees Wash Ashore On Popular Florida Beach

(Note from Erin: This happened right here on the coast of Florida. So sad to report this today.) This week, thousands of dead bees washed up on the popular Naples, Florida beach- Lowdermilk Park. People were even being stung because they didn’t realize what they were stepping on. Most residents and visitors to the ocean expect to see seaweed or seashells, they even look out for jellyfish, but no one expects to see dead or dying bees rolling in. One local resident said, “It’s just really between the water and the sand. I’ve been stung a couple of times, and at...

Over 400 Whales Die in Biggest Recent Stranding in New Zealand

Yesterday, over 400 whales washed up on a narrow sand spit in Golden Bay, New Zealand. Sadly, this isn’t the first time, either as “The Farewell Spit” is a known trap for the mammals (Feb 2016 saw 200 pilot whales stranded there). And this stranding is now the third largest in the recorded history of such events in New Zealand. The biggest stranding, in 1918, saw around a thousand sea creatures beached on the Chatham Islands. The mammals were scattered all over the beach and hundreds of volunteers, led by the New Zealand Department of Conservation and armed with...
